Summer is a busy time on Central Avenue - more pedestrian traffic as well as more crazy drivers. I was narrowly missed driving home the other day by an erratic driver who cut in between me and several other cars. Not my favorite time of year for commuting up and down Central Avenue.

I was stopped at a traffic light and spotted this building with the tattered awnings. It is sad to see the blight throughout the city of Albany. On almost any corner you can find dilapidated buildings. Boarded up, run down, abandoned - some still occupied. It is unfortunate to see since there was a time when these buildings were quite stately.

I spotted this hawk on my lunch time walk around the city of Albany. It was perched on a light pole over Hawk Street. No kidding!!!

Driving to work every day can sometimes become routine. I try not to let that happen and be observant of my surroundings. I noticed this traffic signal the other morning. The portion of the light that is blocked is the left turn signal. I've been meaning to report it to the locals since there is a department that handles this. It is a very busy intersection of Central Avenue where this particular light is located. I hope it has been corrected - I haven't checked in the past few days.

On another note, there isn't a day that goes by that I don't see some building in Albany that I find fascinating. The architecture is so varied and buildings with so much history. Be observant and take notice. There is so much to see. Even the areas that are getting somewhat run down (which is a shame) still have a lot to see.

The weather this winter has been very mild with little or no snow. Yesterday a thunderstorm blew through in the afternoon followed by a beautiful rainbow. Many people posted pics of the rainbow on social media. Today the sky looked interesting to me with the sun peeking through the clouds and a few flurries. This was the morning view. The temps are getting colder and I think that snow will be just around the corner.

The good news, for those of us who are not missing snow and cold, is that even if we get snow, there is not that much winter left.

Make the most of your day and enjoy the sunshine whenever possible.

It's been a while since I posted to this blog. Friends have asked why and the only thing I can think of is that I didn't feel that there was anything of particular interest to report. I'm sure that on a daily basis I see something that is worth a pic or worth mentioning, but I don't always make note of it.

Happy New Year, 2016!! Today while driving on Central Avenue I spotted a gentleman in the car next to me who had a full beard and very long hair. What made it remarkable was that his hair almost looked like a wig. It was curly, but not kinky, and blond, sort of a dirty blond. His beard was dark. He took a second look my way, and I did a double take his. It was the hair - flowy, and sensuous (his). I'm not sure if it was his or a wig. It doesn't really matter and we will never know. If I see him again, I'll be sure to take a closer look.

I will start paying more attention to what is happening around me so I can share more about the fascinating sights and sounds that surround us every day. The Central Avenue sights are very often unusual and interesting.

This pic is not that guy, just a similar rendering.

I spotted this vehicle. The license is "APD754" which I assume is Albany Police Department. My curiosity definitely got hold of me wondering why the Albany Police have such a vehicle and also what were they doing cruising on Central Avenue on a peaceful Thursday morning. I tried to get a better pic but they turned before I had a chance.
In any case, I'm hoping that there is never a need for such armor in Albany - though with the drug war continually escalating and different types of terrorist activity in the country who knows??
Peace.

Today while stopped at a red light on "the Avenue" I spotted a woman in the car next to me who had one of those stretched ear lobes. I could only see her left side and it was a pretty big hole. In her right hand was a cell phone being held up to her right ear. You can get a ticket for talking on a handheld device in NYS. I wondered if she had the phone on that side because the earlobe stretching was affecting her hearing? Joke. It could make it hard to hold a phone to your ear. I don't know.

For the record, I have pierced ears. Two holes in each ear, and my lobes are slightly droopy because of the years of wearing long dangly earrings. So, why would I go to all that trouble to stretch my ear lobes when just wearing earrings will do it for me? I don't understand the purpose of stretching ones ear lobes, but to each his/her own. Mine would flap too much while swimming, biking, and running if I did that, kind of like my hound dog.

Enjoy your day, and let's hope Spring comes forth soon.
Here is someone with the right idea for the morning commute. Spring is just around the corner - need I say more?
Yesterday was that dreaded day when we set the clocks ahead for Daylight Savings Time. So today we had to get up an hour earlier - which was tough. Even the dogs stayed in bed!

While driving in to work, the sun was beaming and the water was streaming!! There was a large water main break on Central Avenue. There was actually a stream running down the street - not a fun sight for those who had to fix it. There was already a bit of an ice build up which will hopefully melt with the warming temps today. This year there have been a record number of breaks reported in the tri-state area. Most likely due to the excessive cold temps we have had, and the fact that these cities are old. Historic.

We may actually hit the mid 50s by mid week this week which I think is a definite indication that Spring is just around the corner. Soon we can all enjoy some sun, the scent of flowers and listening to the birds waking us in the mornings.
The weather this week is supposed to stay in the teens or below. I think we have the eternal optimist pictured here. At least the sun is shining and there is no snow predicted for a couple of days. Maybe these people will get an opportunity soon to enjoy the umbrella and bbq.

We have had a very snowy and cold winter here in the Northeast and I think everyone is yearning for an early spring. Yesterday the temps were in the 30s and the park in Saratoga Springs was mobbed with people - skiing, snow shoeing and walking. The sun was shining and I, for one, was anxious to enjoy the bit of respite from the cold.

I am optimistic that spring will be here soon.
It is located near an intersection, so I've been wondering about it while stopped at the light each time I see it. Is it installed upside down? Did the person adding the numbers just add them upside down? My guess is that the door is installed in reverse of what it should be. I think most doors open right to left?

I'll never really know but being curious and inquisitive is something that helps me with the boring daily commute to and from work.
I tried to rotate the photo and the system isn't allowing it - maybe the computer thinks it is upside down also??
Driving down "the avenue" this morning I the silhouette of the buildings against the cloudy sky. There was the shadow of the sun behind the clouds which accented the skyline. It was a frigid night and morning - 10 degrees when I was driving in to work. The only thing visible on most people were their eyes - hats pulled down, scarves wrapped around their faces, heavy boots and coats and gloves. Here in the Northeast we don't really get the cold temps that you might encounter in Minnesota or the Dakotas, but we suffer when the temps drop below zero. It rarely lasts for very long and the temps are supposed to moderate by the weekend, and everyone seems to be talking about the "deep freeze".

Back to the skyline - Albany has many interesting buildings with distinct architectural features. I walk a lot in the city for exercise and I seem to notice some new building or roof top detail, or a stained glass window, or piece of ironwork that I had not seen before. Next time you drive thru or walk around the city - look around. It can be interesting and there is so much history worth taking a look at.
An easy commute on Central Avenue today. There is no one heading into the city!! No traffic - I think everyone stayed home to get ready for the festivities tonight whatever they might be. Dinner, Dancing, partying, noisemakers, glitter, champagne??

I am staying home tonight relaxing by the fire with my two dogs. Well, one dog will stay close to me and the other will go out in the kitchen because she is afraid of the crackling noises coming from the fireplace.

The hound with the white face is the one who hates loud noises. I guess she won't stay up with me to watch the ball drop either. And let's hope there are no fireworks nearby which will also set her off. I will probably set an alarm to wake up to watch the ball drop at midnight since I'm pretty sure that I will be sleeping by then.

Have a safe and wonderful evening and welcome to 2015!!

There was a light drizzle and it was 32 degrees so the road was freezing. Made for a very slow ride which gave me the opportunity to look around at the buildings up and down "the Avenue".

There was a barber shop that had a very funny (I thought) sign on their front door. A sign of the times? I was so surprised when I saw it that I just had to take a picture and share.

I know we've all seen people on the streets with underwear hanging out above the waist of their pants. Pants not worn on the waist but way below! I must admit that I really don't understand the purpose of this, especially when I watch them trying to walk while having one hand holding up the pants.

Just another day on Central Avenue.

Last night I stopped for some groceries at a fairly large store on Central Avenue. As I was heading in to the store a guy came out running with a backpack. I mean really running as if he was going to catch a bus!! Or something else - maybe he was running away from something or someone? He ran clear across the very large parking lot and kept going down the road. He did not head for the bus stop, there is one at the front of the store parking lot. What I found most intriguing was the fact that no one was running after him. As I entered the store I looked around expecting to see someone who might be concerned that this guy had just bolted from the store. Nope. Nothing. No alarm, no security, no one giving chase. I'm not sure why he was running, maybe he was just late for an appointment or a very important date.

Just another day on Central Avenue.
Not a lot of time to shop, but had a couple of errands to take care of. Traffic can be a little crazy at lunch time, and as we get closer to the holidays it is nightmarish. Today did not seem too congested, but I did get behind this one car that kind of made me crazy.

Driving slowly - and I couldn't get around him (I checked). He would put his blinker on, slow down - and not turn. This happened a couple of times within a few blocks until I finally did pass him. While following this particular vehicle I had time to notice the license plate holder and different features of the car and the man driving.

I motored on and took care of my errands. Now, returning from Colonie to Albany I decided to take the most direct route which is again Central Avenue. A bit of traffic and I get behind a car which looks eerily similar to the one that I saw earlier. Turns on his blinker from the second lane as though he is changing lanes - good - nope - doesn't turn. Now I'm thinking no way could it be the same person. Driving slowly - seeming to be in a bit of a daze - I look at the plate holder. Yup - it's the same car, guy, etc.

So what are the chances of this happening - we are traveling East and were going West before. Almost an hour difference and he is still driving up and down Central Avenue? Well, so am I! Guess chances are not that slim.

Just one of the many perks of driving.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17611506784073346834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7654370106875912376.post-55860207614217958152014-10-21T08:05:00.003-07:002014-10-21T08:05:55.922-07:00A lot of pocket change

Last night I went shopping at a supermarket on Central Avenue - picking up a few ingredients to make a cake for the office birthdays celebration. The area of Central Avenue that I was shopping is close to Everett Road, and for those not familiar with the City of Albany - very close to the city. There is a very mixed clientele at this particular store - some "uptown" folks and quite a few "downtown" and sometimes "downtrodden" folks.

There was a gentleman in front of me buying a few cans of cat food. Those small packets that are supposed to be "gourmet" for cats. I watched as he pulled a pile of coins out of his pocket and laid them on the conveyor belt. I think it was mostly nickels and so it took the store clerk a while to count it out. The man buying the cat food seemed clean and not poorly dressed. I still could not help wondering if the food might not be for the cats, and that the coins were all he could muster to pay for the food. I truly wanted to think better of it and assume the food was for his cat - and that he just happened to have a pile of coins to get rid of.

Let's leave it at that.
In terms of food, it means food that is permissible according to Islamic law. For a meat to be certified "halal," it cannot be a forbidden cut (such as meat from hindquarters) or animal (such as pork.)

This morning my curious mind decided to find out what "Halal" means. I've been seeing it every morning on the front of a store on Central Avenue. I had guessed it was something similar to "Kosher". It is similar as it turns out.

I realize that not everyone really cares, or is as curious but when I see something that I don't know or understand - my reaction is to "google" it!! So - I saved you the trouble of having to look it up!
The tailgate was down and there did not seem to be any type of tether on the load. All I could think was that if he was ever hit (which is not hard on a busy highway) that the load would come flying out and hit whoever was behind it. It surely would've gone thru someone's windshield. !!

I'm sure all they were thinking was that the wood wasn't going to shift while driving, but did they contemplate the possibility of someone else doing something stupid like pulling in front of them??
I stopped following right after taking the pic - which I took at a stop light. They suddenly all stand up as if they saw something - stop what they are doing. Turns out it is a woman who walked across the street and was coming by where they were all working. Lots of smiles and chat ensued. Kinda reminded me of the old "Diet Coke Break commercial" - where the women all stop to look at the construction worker. hehe
<span class="userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">Also spotted today was a guy in a very nice leisure suit. What made it really stand out was the color. A very light shade of pink - almost as if it had been a white suit run thru the wash with something red. Kind of an unusual color. Give him a lot of credit for wearing it.
On the side of the van was the company name "Aftermath". There was a sign on the back of the van stating that there was biohazardous cargo. Wow!

I knew that there were companies that did this type of cleanup - but never had seen this van before. I googled the name of the company and "Yup" they do crime scene clean up. Now, that has got to be a strange job to have.

There was a movie made about this also called "Sunshine Cleaning". It was a very entertaining movie I thought.

Have a nice day :)
I realize that this may come across as a touch insensitive, but I couldn't help notice the incongruity of this woman leaning against the bike rack. Maybe she should be riding a bike and not waiting for a ride?
This was today's Central Avenue sighting - and there was a guy on the corner smoking - to add to the unhealthy behavior.
Very dapper in a tan suit and saw another gentleman waiting for the bus who seemed very eager to talk to him. Granted this was a slightly shorter version of "Elvis" but the hair and sideburns were spot on!!
We are a "cultural mecca" as one friend told me this morning.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17611506784073346834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7654370106875912376.post-88194573194028539102014-08-21T06:29:00.004-07:002014-08-21T06:29:58.010-07:00This morning I spotted a gentleman that I have seen quite frequently on Central Avenue. The other day he was carrying an electric guitar, strumming along, with the electric cable hanging from his arm. Hmmm....

Today he was strumming his "air" guitar. It seemed that he was practicing some elaborate fingering for what I assume will be a big hit someday!
